M.B.C Interview
“That's the beauty of Midwest Blender Company. The name has different ideas, every fruit contributes to the smoothie. The idea of each song was started by a different person.”
September 4th, 2023
We caught up with Midwest Blender Company for their sold-out headlining show at the Golden Dagger
BEFORE TOMORROW: Okay, so we're at the Golden Dagger with Midwest Blender Company. It’s a sold out show and their third headlining show in Chicago-I’m here with..
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Luke, the singer. Patrick- keys. Fillip on Drums. Gabe, (Gabby, whatever on the bass) and Sammy on Guitar.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Okay, so my first question being the obvious one, why is your name your name?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Oh, great question. Well, we always thought it'd be funny to bring a blender on stage and blend fruit during a show, and so I think that was our influence, but we haven't done that yet. I don't know if we ever will, but that adds to the mystique.
BEFORE TOMORROW: How many blenders have you slaughtered throughout your time as a band?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: I would say… what is it? Like two and a half to four? The one we got is already broken. Right? Right. So two have fallen. We're looking to break more, but we hope one day our fans will bring fruits to the show and throw them at us so we can blend them.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Do you think in the future you could have a partnership with some company of blenders?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. Hopefully one from the Midwest. Which one’s do we not like? The nutribullets.
BEFORE TOMORROW: So you guys are Ninja guys?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: They’re Cool. But we're old school. We like the Osterizers.
BEFORE TOMORROW: So, I was told by one of the members of this band that you guys are in the process of recording original music. Which studio did you guys end up going with?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: We recorded at Mystery Street Recording Company.
BEFORE TOMORROW: And how far are you guys along with doing either an EP or a full-length album?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: We wrote the songs to put out an ep, hopefully, ideally sometime this year. Very soon. It's all recorded.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Who's the primary songwriter?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: That's the beauty of Midwest Blender Company. As you see, the name has different ideas. Every fruit contributes to the smoothie. The idea of each song was started by a different person.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Okay. So if you were fruits, which fruits would you be?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Banana, raspberry, palm fruit, guava, apple.
BEFORE TOMORROW: When did you guys first start recording or playing together?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: We started playing together not that long ago. It must have been about six months ago. So in the cold of winter, the time has flown, and then we just recorded like what, two weeks ago? Yeah, that's the first time we ever recorded as a band. That's the first time I've ever recorded, period.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Do you guys hope to go anywhere outside of the Midwest?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Well, contrary to popular belief, if you look at our name, our goal is to take over the galaxy, the universe. Why stop at the world? We would love to play on Mars and Jupiter.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Which venue would you want to go to next?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Schubas, Lincoln Hall, Wrigley Field. Empty Bottle is one of our favorites in Chicago.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Who would you say inspired your Sound?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: That's another thing, just like how we all kind of bring our own sounds to it. We all have pretty different music tastes. There's definitely some overlap, but I mean more like jam band stuff, grunge, country, psychedelic.
BEFORE TOMORROW: If you could choose, who would you want to open for ?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Would you say you guys are a mosh band?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: No, not yet. We have a few songs that might induce a mosh aesthetic. I would love to have a set where one song is a mosh and another song brings people to tears.
BEFORE TOMORROW: So in terms of the next thing, what do you guys plan to do as a band? Do you guys plan to go on tour this year or maybe next year?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: I would say right now it's all about releasing our music. We are really excited about writing new music and then just spending winter creating a cool sound, recording more music, and coming up with cool stuff. The ultimate goal, obviously, is to tour and play around the world, or universe as we said. Right now the goal is to just build out our original set and curate a sound. Initially, each fruit is an individual, but then the blender is blended, and it becomes one whole smoothie. A puree.
BEFORE TOMORROW: How would you describe yourselves to people who've never heard you before?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: * NOTE TO READERS: THE RECORDING MYSTERIOUSLY STOPPED.*
Eclectic. We like it when the people listening to us have a good time. If they're having a good time, we're having a good time. We want people to dance. We want people to get drunk. At the same time, we don't want to be predictable and keep people guessing and keep people on their toes and make our live sets have some interesting quirks that make people want to come back. I'd say my favorite kind of show and my favorite kind of band is one where, like I said earlier, the set just changes the vibe almost every couple song and it flows and it's not the same thing over and over. And I think the dream for us would be to have that and we're on the way. Each song that we recorded for our EP is a complete different genre than the rest. And the concept is that it's again, the introduction to the blender, putting everything in, and then eventually we'll have a complete sound. But now it's an introduction to all our individual taste of music.
BEFORE TOMORROW:Has the album artwork been designed yet? Or do you have an idea of the direction it’ll go in? Say a blender or a band pic?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: I think it would be cool to make a blender in the software blender, but we have nothing planned. This is the first show where we have some merch and that design in our opinion is really cool. It combines our name and the concept of blending and fruits and we're really excited to work with artists to create beautiful designs. Shout out to Anna Neubauer. Anna Neubauer made art design.
BEFORE TOMORROW: How do you feel at this very moment?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Stoked. I don't know. I'm kind of nervous. Nerves are good.
BEFORE TOMORROW: What do you guys do before a show?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Drink. I would say before shows I've found myself having to take a step back and I get very nervous during the shows. I want to make sure that everything is the way it's supposed to be. But then I take a step back and think about what we're doing and think about how we're only six months in and this is our second sold-out show in Chicago we are headlining and we are recording an EP and the trajectory is only going to keep getting exponential. When I think about that, it calms my nerves and gets me unbelievably excited to play the show.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Anything you want to tell your fans?
MIDWEST BLENDER COMPANY: Thank you. We love you guys. Huge things coming soon. Big things coming soon. You're investing early into a great stock. Your money’s worth. Thank you!!
