NEIL FRANCES
Underground Arts October 19,2023
October 19th, 2023
Shrouded in complete darkness, the crowd packed into Underground Arts stood in complete darkness, until- in a quick moment, the venue shuttered alive with the static from a large prop TV screen that adorned the stage as Neil Frances made their way to center stage. Almost immediately the crowd erupted into dance as the set opened with the thumping bass lines of “Standing My Ground” off Neil Frances’s new album It’s All a Bit Fuzzy.
Paired with pink and blue lights that alternated perfectly on each beat, Neil Frances displayed their signature funk/soul based dance sound in perfect vibrations that sent a buzz of bliss into the audience. As we wove through the crowd (during personal favorite) “Some Kind of Static,” you couldn't help but catch a glimpse of a shared smile that contagiously made its way across everyone's faces, with a light air of simple joy and expression that swept along with the pop laced drum lines.
As the concert whirled on, Neil Frances brought out artist dreamcastmoe (who opened the show just an hour before) onto the stage to help sing “She’s Just the Type of Girl,” a song which dreamcastmoe features in on the Neil Frances’s newest collaboration-heavy album.
The dancing delirium came to a climax as the band played “Music Sounds Better With you,” a high geared cover of Stardust’s beloved song of the same name as well as crowd favorite “Teardrop” where everyone shed their inhibitions and allowed themselves to relinquish their worries to the music.
Neil Frances is the brainchild of L.A.-based Jordan Feller and Marc Gilfrey whose collaborations have created the perfect blend of indie guided funk-infused dance music. Their sound can be described succinctly as a movement focused sound that puts an American twist on music that would be expected to be heard in the clubs across the Atlantic. If you are pining for music that can set your feet on fire and free your mind if just for a moment, then Neil Frances is a top necessity to add to your list of concerts to attend this fall.
