Donna Missal

The Foundry March 21, 2023

October 20th, 2023

Climbing the stairs of The Foundry, the cold bite of spring slowly released its grasp as I followed the warm glow of the room that awaited above. An almost tangible change of air quickly happened after turning into the open room; hushed conversation and faces speckled with excitement gave way for mellow vibes as we waited for Donna Missal to take the stage.

The show started with the euphoric tones of “How Does it Feel” off Missal’s sophomore album Lighter causing both Donna and the audience to enter into an almost instantaneous frenzy of raised hands and twirls.

Jumping between all three of her albums, Donna took us through a journey of emotions, from the hyper dance-y upbeat drums of “Flicker” (Revel) and the blaring F**k you attitude of “Hurt by You” (Lighter) to the sultry R&B reminiscent bars of “Test my Patience” (This Time) Donna made sure that every mood was accounted for, taking a second to note that she “wanted this tour to be about dancing, and raging, and crying.”

This wonderful whiplash of emotions was accompanied by Missal’s full and soulful vocals, daring each lyric to pierce a little deeper into the audience leaving the crowd awestruck, breathless, and begging for more after each song came to pass.

The set came to a high powered close as Donna rolled effortlessly into personal favourite “Keep Lying.” Missal once more stunned with her high-octane vocal runs leaving everyone swaying to the whim of their commands.

A New Jersey native, Donna Missal first came onto our radar back in 2018 with the release of first album “This time” marking the beginning of an eventful journey of highs and lows for the singer. From features in box office movies (Covering “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby”; Promising Young Woman) to getting let go at Harvest Records, Missal is a true Phoenix rising out of the rubble, now back in full force with her independently produced third album “Revel.”

Whether in the close quarters of the Foundry or an amphitheatre that could fit hundreds, Donna Missal carries the cutthroat combination of a powerhouse voice matched with permeating lyrics that can easily and fill any size room with a palpable passion. In no less words we can only highly recommend that you check her out live as soon as possible.
