Lime Cordiale
Bottom Lounge July 18th, 2023
July 24th, 2023
As the back room of the Bottom Lounge started to fill on a Tuesday evening, energy radiated off the crowd as everyone eagerly waited for Lime Cordiale to take the stage. Something in the air eluded that tonight would not be any ordinary show but something to leave us “Hanging Upside Down.”
The show was opened with “Money” off their 14 Steps to a Better You album immediately riling up the crowd. We were all hooked and singing along, from the blasting drums to the keen bass line, we hung off of every lyric. The boys continued- throwing in impassioned clarinet, trombone, and even kazoo solos putting a certain (razzle dazzle) into their set.
Fan favourites such as “Imposter Syndrome” and “Naturally” were dotted with brotherly banter. With the duo instigating a “whose side can scream louder” competition that had the room divided, you couldn’t help but feel like a fly on the wall during a conversation between friends.
They spoke fondly of their time in Chicago, making note of Chicagoan’s and Australians’ shared love for bluntness and even showed a spotlight on famous Chicago liquor Malröt, or as they tenderly know it: “vomit.”
The anarchic energy of the set came to a head during “Not That Easy” when the band stopped for a brief tango break that prompted Oli to leap into the crowd for a one-on-one tango with a fellow concertgoer. The dance was sealed with a (candidly consensual) kiss; Oli jumping back on stage saying “We have been away from home a long time, but I mean it’s 2023 and he was wearing our merch.” This naturally prompted a riotous laugh and cheer from the audience. Immediately following, the band rolled into a cover of fellow Australian band The Divinyl’s “I touch myself” where everyone threw their hands up, heads back, and simply danced.
Lime Cordiale first came onto our radar back in 2018 at SXSW. Headed by brother duo Oli and Louis Leimbach from self-proclaimed “bum f*ck Sydney” Australia, Lime Cordiale’s discography finds its foundations in a surf-rock sound with dashes of big band influence giving it an alternative twist. With an undeniably electric stage presence and commendable commitment to touring, we can only hope to have them back as soon as possible.
