BLONDSHELL

Schubas July 12th, 2023

July 13th, 2023

It’s Wednesday night in Chicago. July 12, 2023 to be exact. Everyone’s phone is buzzing with Tornado warning messages.

This is the first time I receive a tornado warning message. Thanks Chicago!” Says lead singer Sabrina of BLONDSHELL to the audience of their sold out show.

Opening with Veronica Mars, the crowd is instantly gratified by hearing the first few notes of the band’s guitarist and bass. Once the drummer enters the song, everyone starts singing. For a song under 2 minutes, it’s packed with a sucker punch of intensity that sets the tone for the rest of the band’s set (consisting of 14 tracks).

Along with playing the 9 songs off their debut album, fans were treated to a new song and a few covers. Each new song is marked by a witty joke from the lead telling us about the significance of each song; like how Salad is about Poison, and Kiss City is about (you guessed it) “Kissing.” The crowd was definitely the loudest when singing along to Kiss City as well. I know I was.

I first saw Blondshell when they opened for Suki Waterhouse in the early winter of 2023. I remember being hooked on this band and eagerly anticipating their debut album. Her vocals are strong and her stage presence draws you in. Their sound is reminiscent of the 90s era yet carefully crafted to reflect the era we live in now. The songs sonically reach you deep inside. Lyrically, she is relatable and the words can possibly reflect one’s own experiences. This band will likely be my most streamed on my Spotify Unwrapped, and they are definitely my favourite artists this year.
